A List of Things I Find Along the Way

nanny sick time

I was getting ready for work this morning when it became apparent (without going into gross details) that I really shouldn’t spend my day around young children about to go on vacation because I could very well get them all sick.  It’s hard in this job to find the balance between taking time off when you are sick and knowing that there’s usually no one to take over for you when you do.  I’m not afraid of losing my job, not with this family, but I don’t like to neglect my responsibilities to them.  Fortunately the girls’ aunt is visiting and although I was supposed to be there to make it easier for her to handle all four girls she can certainly handle them on her own.

In the year and a half that I’ve now worked for this family, aside from taking time off to recover from back surgery (which they completely understood and ps - I was even working the night before my surgery), I have only ever “called in sick” one other time.  That’s not a terrible track record for any worker.

An aside - it’s also interesting working for a doctor because sometimes they realize you are sick before you do.

I’m still making a grocery list for tonight, because Richard still needs milk and coffee but hopefully I can either send him or he can go with me later tonight to make it a quicker trip.  Otherwise I’m fairly certain that I’ll be in bed the rest of the day, which makes me feel a bit more pathetic than I did yesterday, but I’ll survive.
