A List of Things I Find Along the Way

Jan 13

The game last night was pretty great, the Bucks won!  It was my first basketball game, so not too shabby.

I’m really glad that I don’t have to go to work today, especially after all the snow that came down last night and all the shoveling that we did this morning my back is feeling a little wrecked and I don’t really want to venture out onto the roads.

The pup is still wiped out from her snow frolicking yesterday and this morning, so she’s all curled up for a nap and I’m more than a little tempted to join her.

Wicket has thrown herself into a pile of blankets for an early nap after her first encounter with snow in the back yard.  She spent a full ten minutes tearing through the yard, down the back and into the side yard where she ran in a circle so many times she made a visible path through the snow.

I’ve already made some more olive tapenade and I need to convince myself to leave it alone today to let the garlic mellow.  Otherwise I’m just going to spend this snow day doing house work and paper work and other boring things before I curl up to read some more Clash of Kings.

It’s been a good morning, and we can’t wait for the Bucks game tonight.

I promised myself that I wouldn’t go heat up the rest of the pirogues before noon.

Eleven minutes and counting.

First attempt at pierogies and I haven’t fucked it up yet.

If I have time after lunch and chores I’m going to make some more olive tapenade and remember to let the garlic “mellow” overnight and not eat it straight out of the blender. Ps - it tasted great on top of the tomatoes in our caprese salad.

I should probably pay more attention before I burn something.

I’m planning to make fried okra to go with our dinner tonight and it’s all I can do to not make it right this minute and eat that (and only that) for lunch. Maybe I’ll just make some sweet tea to go along with dinner and convince myself that fried okra is not a proper meal.

Dear Republicans,

No matter how many tax breaks you give to businesses (small and otherwise) they will not be able to grow or even squeak by if their customer base is pushed further into poverty.  Money doesn’t work that way.

No love,

Nata

If you do not adhere to the maxim if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all when conversing with someone you don’t know in a public space I’m going to walk away.

And if you proceed to shout after me I’m going to ignore you.

Really people, really.

Scott Walker Recall Petitioners Stunned by Waukesha Walker Supporter

Richard and I were out here today and stopped by to sign the petition.  The petitioners were friendly and we trusted them to be legitimate.  I’d like to say it was uneventful, but really how could it have been?

There were multiple angry shouts from drivers and passersby but one woman actually slowed down her Jeep as she was pulling into the parking lot to scream out of her window telling us how “useless” our (not sure if she was addressing all of us or just the petitioners) efforts and what “wastes” we were.  It actually worried me that she was almost rear-ended by the car behind her because of her need to verbally accost us, this was only compounded when I saw her park and haul out her two small children.

I understand that everyone has the freedom of speech in this country, but why would you want to use it in this way?  Why would you put yourself and your family in harm’s way just to shout some hateful words?  I am doing nothing more than standing on a public sidewalk and the rest of my actions are really none of your business.  You had your chance for a say when you voted for (I assume) and elected Scott Walker governor, I now have my chance to pull him out of an office I never thought him capable of holding, and this is what democracy looks like.

All in all I really wish I didn’t have to spare a single thought to all this bullshit, at least for the next couple days, but I know that’s too much to hope for.  Let’s just remember that we’re all human, and to show some common decency and respect for one another.  Now during the “holiday season” and every other single day of the year.
